First,I would like to thank Mr.Goh Loon Tik, the boss of Tick Design & Build, for giving me the opportunity to do an interior design internship within the organization. My heartfelt thanks to his invaluable and stimulating suggestion, which helped me in all the time of projects and for the writing of this report.

I want to thank the supervisor and staff of Tick Design & Build,namely Ms.Tan Kar Yee and Mr.Hang Ding Jie. With their patience and kindly they created an enjoyable working environment and if without their help,I think this report might not have been completed.

At last, I would like to thank the encouragement of my family and my fellow industrial training student.

Introduction

Interior design is one department in Point College,setting up to teach and provide all students the major of Interior Design which want to achieve the professional and creative interior designer in Malaysia. This department provides students most of courses are interior design technique course and construction course. Every year seniors students are required to find the firm in which is related to the interior design to do internship. Doing internship is one of segment of interior design students to complete their 2 and half years diploma. The reason of school requires students to complete this part is to provide them to practice, to learn and to develop their knowledge and skill concerning the interior design rather than study theory only in school. Other reason is that Point College wants students to get in touch and to get well prepared with interior design firm by understanding in advance about the process of interior design enterprises or how the interior design enterprises operate.

I have done internship in Tick Design & Build for 3 months. Firstly, I would like to take this golden opportunity to tell lecturer briefly about my internship place environment to my involvement with this institution.

Every year, Tick Design & Build would selected one student to do internship in their company to provide students to practice their knowledge and get used to with the different environment of workplaces. First, I attached my resume to the company by email.After a few weeks, I was asked to have an interview with the director of Tick Design & Build. Around two or three weeks later, I was told that I was chosen to do the internship in their company.That I was very happy.

Tick Design & Build is a small interior design company.They only have 3 designers in the company but they still can provide customers the professional works in the specified time.

Introduction Of The Company

Tick Design & Build was incorporated on 2 January 2009. The initial operation of the company was based primarily in interior design and carpentry works for all kind of furniture and cabinet. It has been expanded to the principle activities which include plaster ceiling, partition, tiles, wood flooring, wallpaper, electrical works and wet works more commonly known as an “INTEGRATED SERVICE SOLUTION”. Tick Design & Build which provides “turnkey solution” to the increasing demand for interior design, renovation, materials and decorative finishing where by their company key emphasis is offer the "best of breed" affordable services and solutions to their customers.

The company caters to a wide range of customers ranging from the office, retail shop, shopping centre mall, household and many others. Thus, their experience and expertise is not limited to a single field.

Tick Design & Build integrates 5 important aspect – They design, space planning, practicality, material selection and cost control. Clever coordination and integration of these 5 aspects will result in brilliant and cost efficient interior and exterior fit out designs.

They understands well how to manipulate these aspects and help their customers turn their dream interior and exterior fit out project into reality within the allocated budget.With this they strive to achieve total customers satisfaction.

With a strong team of experienced professionals in various fields in the design and construction industry, they are able to plan, design and built accordingly to the customer requirement and budget. They are very committed and serious in all their projects. They take great pride and are extremely passionate in the successes of their completed designer’s project.

They work like a family. Discussion and division of work are important for them to establish a perfect environment for good work to produced and the same time strengthen their team work.

Objectives

Being an interior design student in Point College, every seniors students are required to do their internship in related interior design outlet. I am one of students who studied in year 3 in academic year of 2014-2016. During the summer break, I have done my internship in one interior design company where it is called “Tick Design & Build” located in Klang.

The following are the objectives of my internship in the company: 

to understand the functioning and working conditions of an interior design organization. 

to see what is like to work in a professional environment. 

to see if this kind of work is a possibility for my future career. 

to use my gained skills and knowledge. 

to see what skills and knowledge I still need to work in a professional environment. 

to learn about the organizing of a research project (planning, preparation and more)  

 to get fieldwork experience. 

 to get experience in working with persons from another culture. 

 to enhance my communication skills. 

to enhance me ability to ask appropriate questions, communicate concepts, draw assumptions and implications, and listen empathetically to different points of view so that me can be able to develop solutions with clients. 

to provide students with opportunities to exhibit their work, enter meaningful competitions, and develop a design portfolio.Having done internship over there, I was responsible for many things and tasks such as planning furniture layout plan,lighting layout plan,M&E layout plan and more.

Through my work, I have achieved some of a number of my stated goals. I strongly believe that having done internship over 2 months, I have gained more experiences and more knowledge concerning the interior design firm from which I can practise and implement in my job for the future in the country and others.Finally I can give a conclusion on the internship experience according to my learning goals.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Ms.Tan Kar Yee is a supervisor of Tick Design & Build and a person of in charge my work. Anythings need to help or some works need to complete she will explain and guide me to complete it.At the first month, I was required to follow her went to several site to learn how the interior designer work to get used to within the places.We went to several site for measure and process the work such as Subang Empire, Meru Klang, Damansara Kim and more.

The first site location we went is Meru Klang.We in charge a client called Mr. Peter to process his small office carpentry work.First, we follow the furniture layout plan use measurement tape to measure the size of the room design and use the stickers stick on the floor for marking.This step is important because next day partition workers will follow these marking to build up the partitions.Then,we have to went to the site everyday to make sure the workers are working and processing the work complete.After partitions completed,electricity work,glass work and vinyl flooring work also continued day by day completed.This project we spend 2 weeks to completed.

This is my first time touching and first project done in collaboration with others.It just likes I have never ever experiences with environment of the outside workplace since it is big.I have learn a lot of things in this project.

Next few months,I also bring another designer Mr.Hang Ding Jie went other site to process some project such as Subang Empire to process a soho office and Damansara Kim to process a Teppanyaki restaurant.In this process,not only workers working their work, we also need to help them somethings to completed the projects such as help them bought the lights and lamps,key lock and more.Of course, I am not everyday ran out in this 3 months.I also have done some layout plan in Autocad and done some 3D in office.

As I first did the internship, I have not known anything. Regarding challenges I have met during my internship period, it was so much.Fortunately,staffs of Tick Design & Build are kind and patient to teach me a lot of things and computer skills that can let me as fast as possible to completed my works.But sometimes they are busying complete their works,so they have not a lot of time to teach me and explain to me somethings I am confused.By this time,I should go google search and solve my problem example my 3D Max computer skills is not well so I would take a lot of time go Youtube watch and learn myself.Though it may take a lot of time to watch,but can improve my 3D Max computer skills I don’t think this is a big problem.About Autocad,they also told me many fast way to completed a full set layout plan in half day.When I have nothings to do in office,I would go and read some of the material flyers and material sample books to understand how they make and also improve my knowledge.At the same time,I also would try to help our company contact the material supplier asked for the most latest material sample book.When they came our office introduce their materials,Mr. Hang Ding Jie would sit beside me and guide me how to communicate with him and what questions we should ask.We have met ICA, Mieco, Vera, Inovar, Cosentino,Greenlam,EDL,Feruni, Firenzee wallpaper suppliers.

Sometimes,my boss Mr.Goh Loon Tik would personally to gave me some work to do include sent email to clients and more.For me, he gave the most difficult job is plan the Uncle Tetsu’s office interior design and I must done in collaboration with another designer Mr.Hang Ding Jie. Of course, in this process will be a lot of unpleasant things happen because the concept of two of us are not the same. I believe this is a problem intern students should be met, so I chose to overcome it. I efforts to communicate with him in order to maintaining a good work relationship and we planned a good design for client.Both Uncle Tetsu’s office design is an important project for us, so boss would keep open meeting for discussion,listen to other staff’s suggestion and decision concept.Both of us have done many different option furniture layout plan for Uncle Tetsu’s office in 2 weeks.Although my work was unsuccessful, but I'm not sad because I learned a lot and feeling very happy.

Next, I also have done and trace a lot of different industries layout plan such as Kiwk & Ez Hair Cut shop design, Parexgroup office design, Hong Xian Kindergarden, Teppanyaki Restaurant, Mr.Jasper Condominium, Double Storey Terrace House, Hippopo Baby Spa, Espressolab and boss of Tick Design & Build new house.These works helped me a lot because different industry needs the different size of the space, the works let me know how much of space is comfortable for them.

Next page is the three months of site photos,3D Max and works what I have done in company. It will be method according January to March.These will become one of my portfolio.
